Rainwater HOG 2

Rainwater HOG designed this commercial installation of 114 HOGs storing 5,700 gallons at Nundah School in Queensland, Australia. Average yearly rainfall for the area is 47.2 inches.

The 114 HOGs were installed along the main elevations of the new school library building to capture water from a number of downspouts. The HOGs were custom molded in the school colors of yellow and black, with UV stabilizing additives to minimize fading over the life of the building. The HOGs hold a total 5,700 gallons (20,520 L) which is used primarily for toilet flush within the buildings, with excess tapped for garden irrigation.

Additionally, Nundah School has utilized the Rainwater HOGs as learning tools in the areas of math, science, and studies of society and the environment. Students have a chance to see rainwater collection in action, and are introduced to the concept of multipurpose design through the HOGs, which can also be used to provide thermal mass, as well as an emergency water supply. Total supply cost of Rainwater HOGs plus HOG Wall kits was US $22,000.
