ECOVIE 1

This ECOVIE system was installed on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. The system is set up as the primary water source for a large home.  Rain from the 7,000 square foot roof (44” annually) is filtered through Gutter Glove screens and is stored in a 25,000 gallon basement cistern lined with Rainwater Pillows.  A 2 HP Rainmaster pump (Rain Harvest Systems) feeds water to treatment and irrigation back up.  Treatment uses a Rainsafe ozone/UV system with 5 micron and carbon filtration following an M21 GE multi-media filter rated for 21 gpm.  The back up to rainwater comes from a brackish well which requires desalinization.  ECOVIE installed a desalinization plant rated for 6 gpm to feed to a separate cistern.  This 7,500 gallon cistern (also with Rainwater Pillow lining and Rainmaster pump) provides back up water to the home and irrigation.

Type of installation: Residential
Location: Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Is the site accessible to the public? - Contact ECOVIE to coordinate
Annual Rainfall - 44 inches per year with distinct rainy and dry seasons
Purpose of Catchment - Whole home household and irrigation
Special features:

  • GutterGlove screens. Using this superior product was necessary because downspouts are internal to house walls and lead directly to basement cisterns, which made other first flush or diversion options impossible.
  • Potable Rainwater Pillows - preferred over coated concrete cistern
  • Multi-media filtration (MMF) was required to provide as hands-off and automated system as possible to minimize filtration cartridge changes.
  • Desalination with R/O at 6 gpm to provide up to 6,500 gallon per day to water up to 2.5 acres.
