The Role of Rainwater Harvesting in Zoos

Zoos are ideal venues for demonstrating the importance of sustainable water management due to their unique role in conservation, education, and community engagement. Rainwater harvesting involves capturing and storing rainwater from roofs, pathways, and other surfaces for reuse in irrigation, animal care, and cleaning.

Virginia Approves Regulations for Rainwater Harvesting

The Virginia Department of Health has finalized new regulations on potable rainwater harvesting systems, the 12 VAC 5-635, effective Oct. 21. These regulations establish guidelines for the collection and reuse of rainwater, ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently. The goal is to promote sustainable water practices while protecting public health in Virginia. Compliance with ASSE standards 2110, 21120, and 21130 will be mandatory under the new rules.

“This marks a big step forward for rainwater harvesting” says Heather Kinkade, executive director of ARCSA.

National Water Reuse Action Plan: Online Platform

WRAP actions seek to advance the consideration of reuse to improve the security, sustainability, and resilience of our nation's water resources, especially in the face of a changing climate. This action will focus on advancing nonresidential stormwater and rainwater catchment systems for potable and non-potable water reuse applications.
